Before IV Sedation and General Anesthesia

  • If given preoperative valium, please follow instructions of taking one pill at bedtime the night prior to surgery, and the remaining tablets (generally two) 1 hour prior to the procedure with a small sip of water.
  • You may not have anything to eat or drink (excluding water) for eight hours prior to the appointment.  If you have had difficulty in obtaining IV’s previously due to small veins, please let us know.  You are able to drink ONLY WATER up to two hours prior to surgery in special cases.  Please let us know if applies to you and we will confirm preoperative instructions with you.
  • No smoking for at least 12 hours before surgery. Ideally, cut down or stop smoking as soon as possible prior to the day of surgery.  For those patients who smoke or use any marijuana product, it is imperative to let us know and refrain for 48 hours.
  • A responsible adult must accompany the patient to the office, remain in the office during the procedure, and drive the patient home.
  • The patient should not drive a vehicle or operate any machinery for 24 hours following anesthesia.
  • Please wear loose fitting clothing with sleeves which can be rolled up past the elbow, and low-heeled shoes.
  • Contact lenses, jewelry, and dentures must be removed at the time of surgery.
  • Do not wear lipstick, excessive makeup, or nail polish on the day of surgery.
  • If you have an illness such as a cold, sore throat, stomach or upset bowels, please notify the office as soon as possible as this can cause anesthetic complications.
  • If you take routine oral medications, please check with Dr. Turley prior to your surgical date for instructions, as many of your medications can be continued and taken preoperatively.  If you are on blood thinners, please do not stop them without letting us know unless you have been specifically instructed to do so by your primary care physician.
  • Please leave cell phones with your escort or turn them off if you are bringing them in to the surgical suites.
